How to show up in Google AI Overviews

By the WebMaxs team · · 5 min read

Short answer: There is no special trick. Give Google pages it can crawl and index, with clear text that answers real questions, accurate structured data and a complete Google Business Profile. Then track a fixed set of searches over time. Nobody can guarantee your page will be linked in an AI Overview.

What are Google AI Overviews?

AI Overviews are AI-written summaries that Google shows at the top of some search results. They usually include links to web pages that support the summary.

For a business, the goal is to have your page among those links. Your page then gets seen by people who are actively searching.

Google explains how its AI features relate to websites on Search Central. That page is the primary source. Read it before you pay anyone for "AI Overview optimisation".

Is there a special tag or trick to get in?

We do not know of any tag, file or trick that guarantees a place in AI Overviews. Be wary of anyone selling one.

The honest approach is strong, normal SEO. Pages Google can find, read and trust are the ones that have a chance of being linked. That is slower than a trick, but it is real.

If someone offers a guaranteed AI Overview placement, ask them to show where Google says this is possible. Check their claims against Google's own documentation.

What SEO basics matter most?

The basics decide whether Google can use your page at all. Get these right before anything else.

  1. The page is indexed. Search for your exact page title on Google, or check it in Google Search Console.
  2. Crawlers can reach it. Your robots.txt file should not block important pages by mistake.
  3. The key content is in text. Facts inside images, PDFs or slow scripts are harder to read.
  4. The page loads fast on a phone. Slow pages hurt people first. Our post on website speed for ads covers the main fixes.
  5. Internal links point to it. Link important pages from your menu and from related pages.
  6. Each page has one clear topic. One service, one city or one question per page is easier to understand.

Our SEO service covers these checks, and our AI search optimisation service builds on them.

How should you write pages that answer questions?

Answer the question in the first one or two sentences, then add detail. This helps a hurried reader and makes the page easy to summarise.

Some practical habits:

  • Use the customer's own words in headings, such as the exact question a patient would type.
  • Give specific facts: prices or ranges, timings, areas served, what is included.
  • Keep paragraphs short and use lists for steps.
  • Add a date and update the page when facts change.
  • Say what you do not offer, so you are not matched to the wrong searches.

Write for the person first. A page stuffed with phrases for machines usually reads badly and helps nobody.

Does structured data help?

Structured data helps machines understand what a page is about. It is worth adding, as long as it matches what people can see on the page.

Useful types for many businesses include LocalBusiness (or a more specific type), Product, FAQPage, Event and Article. Fill in the real details: name, address, phone, hours and prices.

Do not mark up content that is not visible on the page. Do not add fake reviews or ratings to your markup. Inaccurate markup can cause more harm than none.

For local searches, your Google Business Profile matters too. Keep it complete and accurate using Google Business Profile Help, and see our Google Business Profile checklist.

What will not help?

Several popular shortcuts waste time or carry risk. Here is a quick comparison.

An llms.txt file is a separate proposal aimed at AI tools in general. Do not assume it affects Google AI Overviews unless Google says so.

How do you know if you appear?

Track a fixed list of searches by hand, and watch your overall Google Search traffic in Search Console. Together these give a fair picture.

Worked example (example numbers): A physiotherapy clinic in Mumbai tracks 15 searches its patients use, such as "physio for back pain Andheri".

In the first check, an AI Overview appears on 8 of the 15 searches.

The clinic's site is linked in 2 of those 8 AI Overviews, which is 2 ÷ 8 = 25%.

The clinic rewrites its 3 main service pages to answer questions in the first lines and adds structured data.

Six weeks later, it runs the same 15 searches again and records both counts.

These are example numbers to explain the method. They are not a forecast.

Searches change by location and device, so check from the same city and device each time. Save dated screenshots.

Can you limit how Google uses your content?

You can control some things, but think before you do. Limiting how Google shows your content can also reduce how often you appear.

If you want to limit snippets or previews, read Google's current documentation on preview controls first. Test changes on one or two pages before applying them across the site.

For most businesses that want customers, the better path is to make public pages clear and accurate. Keep private material behind a login instead.

How long does this take, and what does help cost?

Expect months, not days. Google needs to recrawl your pages, and trust builds slowly through links, mentions and reviews.

You can do much of this in-house. If you want help, SEO and AI search optimisation can be added to any WebMaxs monthly plan; ask on your call. Plan prices are on our pricing page. For the wider picture, read what AI search optimisation is.

Frequently asked questions

Do AI Overviews appear for every search?

No. They appear on some searches and not others, and this can change over time. That is why you should track a fixed list of searches rather than assume every query shows one.

Do I need a separate page for AI Overviews?

No. Write good pages for people. A page that clearly answers a question serves both normal results and AI features, so there is no need for a hidden or duplicate version.

Will being linked in an AI Overview bring traffic?

Sometimes. Some people click the links to read more, and some get what they need from the summary. Judge results by enquiries and sales from search, not by mentions alone.

Can a new website appear in AI Overviews?

It can, once Google has crawled and indexed its pages. A new site usually needs time to be discovered and to earn links and mentions, so build the basics first and be patient.

Should I rewrite all my pages for AI?

No. Start with your most important pages: services, prices, location and the questions customers ask most. Improve those, measure, then move on to the rest.
