What are ChatGPT ads, and can Indian businesses run them?

Short answer: ChatGPT ads are labelled sponsored placements shown below ChatGPT's answers to adult users on the Free and Go plans. Yes, Indian businesses can run them. Ads launched in India in late August 2026, and self-serve Ads Manager opened to Indian advertisers on 4 September 2026, with daily budgets from ₹725.
What are ChatGPT ads?
ChatGPT ads are paid, labelled sponsored placements that appear below ChatGPT's answers. They let a business show an offer to someone who is already asking about that topic.
That is the core of it, as of October 2026, according to OpenAI's own announcement. The ad does not replace the answer. It sits underneath it, clearly marked as sponsored.
OpenAI also makes two promises that matter for trust:
- Ads do not change ChatGPT's answers.
- Advertisers do not see people's chats.
So you are buying a visible spot next to a relevant conversation. You are not buying a mention inside the answer.
Who sees ChatGPT ads?
Adults on the Free and Go plans see ChatGPT ads. People on Plus, Pro and Enterprise do not, as of October 2026.
This shapes who you can reach. Paying subscribers, including Enterprise users, are outside the ad audience. Free and Go users are a large, broad group, which suits consumer brands and local services.
Because ads only show to adults, there is no route to under-18 audiences. That is a good thing for most brands. It also means youth-focused products should plan elsewhere.
When did ChatGPT ads launch in India?
ChatGPT ads launched in India in late August 2026. Self-serve Ads Manager opened to Indian advertisers from 4 September 2026.
Outlook Business reported that India is OpenAI's second-largest market. The launch started with more than 50 brands. WPP and Omnicom were the first agency partners.
A few days later, the self-serve door opened. Manifest reported that Indian advertisers could use Ads Manager from 4 September 2026. That is the change that matters for small and mid-sized businesses. You no longer need a large media agency to get in.
India is not alone. CNBC reported that ChatGPT ads were available in 89 countries as of 21 October 2026. That list includes the US, the UK, Canada, Australia and India.
How much do you need to start in India?
The daily budget starts at ₹725 in India, as of October 2026, according to Manifest. That is the floor, not a recommendation.
A floor tells you what the platform accepts. It does not tell you what you need to learn something useful. A test that is too small and too short often ends with "we are not sure", which wastes the money anyway.
Worked example (example numbers): A clinic in Pune decides to run at the minimum for a first test.
14 days × ₹725 = ₹10,150 of ad spend.
30 days × ₹725 = ₹21,750 of ad spend.
If, for example, clicks cost ₹29 each, ₹21,750 buys 750 clicks over the month.
These are example numbers to show the maths, not a forecast of real costs.

How do you pay for ChatGPT ads?
You can buy on CPM, CPC or conversion-optimised CPC, as of October 2026. exchange4media also describes India as a price test, so expect prices to move.
| Buying model | What you pay for | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| CPM | Every 1,000 times your ad is shown | Awareness, a new launch, or when you want reach in a category |
| CPC | Each click on your ad | Most first tests, because you only pay when someone visits |
| Conversion-optimised CPC | Clicks, with the system aiming for people likely to convert | Once tracking is working and you have some conversion data |
For a first campaign, CPC is usually the easiest to judge. You can compare cost per click and cost per lead with what you already pay on Meta or Google.
Conversion-optimised buying depends on good tracking. If your website does not record leads properly, the system has nothing to learn from.
Which Indian businesses should test ChatGPT ads first?
Businesses whose buyers ask questions before they buy should test first. People use ChatGPT to research, compare and plan.
Good early candidates include:
- Hotels and resorts: people asking where to stay in Coorg for a long weekend.
- Real estate: people asking which areas in Pune suit a young family.
- Education and coaching: people asking which data analytics course to take.
- Clinics and wellness: people asking what to check before a dental implant.
- Software and D2C brands: people asking for a good billing tool for a small shop.
A business with a weak offer or a slow website should fix those first. A new channel cannot rescue a page that does not convert. If you already run Meta or Google ads, compare the channels in our post on ChatGPT ads vs Google ads.
What should you prepare before your first campaign?
Prepare a clear offer, a fast landing page and working tracking before you spend a rupee. These three decide whether a test teaches you anything.
A checklist to work through
- One offer per campaign. A free consultation, a site visit, a seasonal package. Keep it specific.
- A matching landing page. It should answer the same question the ad answers. One form, one button.
- Tracking you trust. Count leads the same way across every channel. Add UTM tags to your ad links so your analytics shows ChatGPT as a source.
- A budget and a time limit. Decide in advance how much you will spend and for how long.
- An account in your name. Billing should go to your own card or company account.
Our step-by-step setup guide walks through each stage in order.
What are the limits right now?
ChatGPT ads are new, so there are few public benchmarks and the tools are still developing. Treat early campaigns as tests, not as a replacement for channels that already work.
Be careful with anyone who quotes "typical" ChatGPT ad results today. The channel opened to Indian self-serve advertisers only in September 2026. Prices may change as the India price test continues.
Also remember the audience limits. Paying subscribers do not see ads. Some of your most valuable buyers may be on Plus, Pro or Enterprise.
If you want help, WebMaxs runs ChatGPT ads management as an add-on to any monthly plan. Ad spend is always paid by you, directly to the platform. Plan prices are on our pricing page.
Frequently asked questions
Do ChatGPT ads change what ChatGPT recommends?
OpenAI says ads do not change ChatGPT's answers, as of October 2026. The ad sits below the answer as a labelled sponsored placement. If you also want to be named inside the answer itself, that is a separate job called AI search optimisation.
Can advertisers read what people type into ChatGPT?
No. OpenAI says advertisers do not see people's chats, as of October 2026. You see the results of your campaign, such as impressions and clicks, not the conversations behind them.
Do I need an agency to run ChatGPT ads in India?
No. Self-serve Ads Manager is open to Indian advertisers, so a business can set up its own account. Some businesses hire help for tracking, copy and testing. Whoever runs it, keep the account and billing in your own name.
Are ChatGPT ads available outside India?
Yes. CNBC reported on 21 October 2026 that ChatGPT ads were available in 89 countries, including the US, the UK, Canada and Australia. Check OpenAI's current list before you plan a campaign in any other market.
Will my ad show to people who pay for ChatGPT?
Not on Plus or Pro. As of October 2026, those plans and Enterprise stay ad-free. Your audience is adults on the Free and Go plans.
